One of the joys of going to the fiber art shows is seeing the fiber-craft related projects made by people who are either also fiber artists or, so it seems, people whose significant others are fiber artists.
Ken and Carol Ledbetter of KCL Woods craft an array of tools for fiber artists. Their work is exquisite, and the tools decorative, artistic, and thoroughly useable. His yarn bowls are the best I have seen. I have one of them – gift from Thor!) To the right is a picture from the KCL website.
Fricke now makes his winders in three different woods: Padauk (a gorgeous dark red/orange hardwood, sometimes with black striations), Purpleheart (an extremely dense and water resistant wood; the longer the wood is exposed to sunlight, the color of purple slowly changes from a light purple to a substantially chocolate-purple color), and Sapele (a rich and nicely grained, reddish-brown hardwood).
I bought the purpleheart. 🙂
